about

Adam Gibbons, the artist & producer behind Lack of Afro, The Damn Straights & The Unity Sextet, has today released the 'Here We Go! EP' - the first part of 'The Last Bastion OST', a cinematic, funk & soul soundtrack to a film that has yet, and may never, be made. Encompassing lush string and horn arrangements, the project will be released in three parts, with the full soundtrack coming out on limited edition, red vinyl this summer. Having originally got into music with the idea of scoring for films, The Last Bastion sees Adam fulfilling something of a long-held ambition.

"Long before all the Lack of Afro stuff took over, being a film composer was all I wanted to do. All my heroes were composers - guys like John Barry, John Williams & Thomas Newman and more recently David Holmes, Daniel Pemberton and Ludwig Goransson. There is something magical about a great film score - it adds so much to the cinematic experience in every way imaginable. I was always drawn to what the music was doing and I was fascinated by the guys who were the composers of the magic.”

Although Adam’s Lack of Afro productions are constantly in high demand with broadcasters and TV networks worldwide, (helping him cultivate a loyal fanbase through seven album releases and multiple remixes), he has yet to be offered that first film score. So last year he set about creating his own.

“I got the idea from David Holmes, one of my favourite film composers who, as an aspiring DJ at the time, desperately wanted to score movies but didn't know how to break through into that world. Instead, he decided to make imaginary soundtracks to the short films he carried around in his head. The result was the 1995 album 'This Film's Crap, Let's Slash The Seats'.”

The plot itself again came from Adam. The film starts off with four men - having had enough of the uninspiring lives they each lead, decide to pack up all their possessions and travel to a place called 'The Last Bastion' - a kind of utopian theme park that promises eternal fulfilment.

For each of the cues Adam would picture the scene, then imagine what they'd look like from a director's point of view - and how as the director, he would hear the music.

Recorded in Middle Farm Studios in South Devon (where the last Lack of Afro record I’m Here Now was recorded), the Here We Go! EP and the following full release will appeal to anyone familiar with Adam’s work as Lack of Afro, The Unity Sextet and most recently The Damn Straights, but the record also stands alone as another impressive addition to Adam’s ever-growing list of projects.
